This course has only scratched the surface of flute performance and it is up to you to continue your growth as a player! One way to help develop your playing is to listen to outstanding flute professionals to help you develop your ear for great sound. Here are some recommended artists to get your listening journey started. Attached is just one recording among a vast list of flute repertoire. I encourage you to utilize the fantastic resource that is the internet to dive deeper into your flute listening journey!

While listening, try to think critically about what you are hearing. Why do these professionals sound the way that they do? What makes their sound different than yours, and how can you work to sound more like them?

Jasmine Choi

A celebrated flutist, Jasmine Choi is well known for her wide variety of performances in many genres. She was the former principal flute of the Vienna Symphony and associate principal of the Cincinnati Symphony and has performed all around the world. She has even been called “The goddess of flute” by the Korea Times.

Sir James Galway

Widely regarded as the world’s premier classical flutists, Sir James Galway is without a doubt one of the best examples that students can listen to. He has a vast discography of performances across many styles, and is well known and respected for his unique interpretations of the flute literature. He was even featured as a collaborating artist on the soundtrack to Lord of the Rings.

Herbie Mann

Herbie Mann was well known for being one of the first jazz artists to specialize in the flute. Herbie performed on over 80 albums and helped to inspire flute players to continue exploring genres outside the classical style.

Greg Pattillo

Greg is a unique flute player who made a name for himself through his viral youtube videos that featured his signature beatboxing flute sound. He tours as a performer, educator and member of the modern chamber ensemble “The Project Trio.”

Method Books

There are many method books to choose from but the ones below are recommended to help propel your flute playing to the next level. These books can easily be purchased online or you can check at your local music store.

The Rubank Method Books have four volumes (beginner - advanced 1 & 2) and consist of many tone & technique development studies.

Melodious and Progressive Studies is a book intended for upper level flute students (advancing high school). Many of these etudes appear in auditions for state level honor ensembles.
