Trombone Care Essentials
Every Trombone player needs to have several items to ensure proper instrument care. These items will help prevent wear and tear while maintaining instrument quality. Ensure that you carry these items with your trombone and use accordingly.
SLIDE OIL:
Slide oil is necessary to guarantee that your slide moves with ease. NEVER use valve oil on your slide - it is not made for Trombone slides!
You should only need to apply slide oil about once a week. Below are a few recommendations:
Slide-O-Mix Rapid Comfort Trombone Lubricant
Yamaha Trombone Slide Lubricant
SPRAY WATER BOTTLE (SMALL):
After applying slide oil, your daily maintenance will be your spray water bottle. If your slide does not work, simply apply some water using a small spray bottle. If water does not improve the action of the slide, it may be time to clean off the residual slide oil and start fresh with a new coat of lubricant.
TUNING SLIDE GREASE:
To ensure your tuning slides move with ease, you need to have tuning slide grease in your case. DO NOT use this on your main slide - these are for the tuning slides. Apply a small amount to the inside tubing and use the outer slide tubing (one end at a time) to evenly coat the inner tubing. If these slides become dirty, simply clean them off with your cloth and re-apply. If they become hard to move, they require more in depth cleaning.
MICROFIBER CLOTH:
Use this to remove any dirt or grime that is slowing down your slide. On average, once every three weeks is a good timeline for slide cleaning. Simply wipe down the slide in between slide lubricant applications. If the slide still presents issues, it may be time for a professional service and cleaning.
CLEANING ROD & CLOTH:
The cleaning rod that comes with your instrument is the best bet for keep the outer slide clean. Instead of investing in a cleaning kit, simply get a cheesecloth! Wrap the cheesecloth around the cleaning rod and carefully insert into the outer slide to swab and clean it. You should do this once every 3 weeks.
