IN THIS LESSON:

  • Utilize the video to learn how to form a proper embouchure and create a the buzz needed for playing the trombone.

  • Learn how to articulate a note on the Trombone.

After watching the video above, utilize this exercise to practice getting a buzz. Always take a full breath that is low, and use a lot of air to support your buzz. Practice this two ways:

  1. Mouthpiece Buzz using a mirror to ensure proper mouthpiece placement. Remember that everyones embouchure is slightly different, but as a starting point, aim for somewhere closer to 2/3rds upper lip, 1/3rds lower lip in the mouthpiece.

  2. Playing Concert F on the Trombone

Once you get comfortable with your airstream and forming the buzz, let’s then put that together with an articulation.

Articulation is important for starting our notes with clarity. To start developing articulation, start by saying the word “dooh”. Notice that the tip of the tongue naturally places itself behind the top row of your teeth where your teeth meet your gums. This is a great starting point for general articulation.

Now, using the exercise shown below, practice taking a full, deep breath and beginning your airstream and buzz with a “dooh” articulation. The goal is for your air to stay steady, and to get a consistent sound.

Tip #1: Keep your airstream consistent. Each bar should be played with one airstream - think one airstream on every bar. For example, in bar six, think whole note air and tongue four times.

Tip #2: Get your tongue out of the way of your airstream quickly! The slower your tongue moves, the more broken up your sound will be.

Tip #3: Keep your embouchure set and your jaw steady. Do not “chew” on your articulations by dropping your jaw at the start of your notes.

Tip #4: Consistent articulations on the Low B-flat articulations can be tricky! Open up the space between your teeth while keeping your embouchure set. Work on this consistently to get a great start and end to your lower register notes!
