IN THIS LESSON:
Learn about the Bass Trombone and its main uses.
The Bass Trombone is another common instrument in the Trombone Family.
This instrument is quite similar to the F-attachment Tenor Trombone, but it has a larger bore size and a larger bell. Bass Trombones typically require more air to play due to the larger size.
The main purpose of Bass Trombone is to play the lower register notes, especially those in the pedal register, with a bit more ease. While single trigger bass trombones exist, it is becoming more common for these instruments to also have an additional trigger, which much like the F-Attachment Tenor Trombone, creates some useful alternate slide positions.
This instrument is generally used on lower trombone parts (such as 3rd Trombone) although, often times concert band, jazz bands, and orchestras, will call specifically for a Bass Trombone.
Bass Trombones are not recommended for beginners. If you are interested in picking up bass trombone, talk to your director to determine if it is right for you and if the need for this instrument is present in your ensemble.
